Revisiting the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis: A Case of Central Europe

نویسندگان

چکیده

The rapid economic growth observed in Central European countries the last thirty years has been result of profound political changes and liberalization. This is partly connected with reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, problem CO2 emissions seems to remain unresolved. aim this paper test whether Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis holds true for an annual sample data that covers 1995–2016 most countries. We examine cointegration by applying Autoregressive Distributed Lag bound testing. first study examining relationship between individual from a long-run perspective, which allows results be compared. confirmed cointegration, but our estimates EKC only Poland. It should also noted all nine countries, energy consumption leads increased elasticity ranges 1.5 Bulgaria 2.0 Croatia. exceptionally low Estonia (0.49). Our findings suggest solve environmental degradation Europe, it necessary individualize policies implemented Union.

Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis: A Survey

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis postulates an inverted-U-shaped relationship between different pollutants and per capita income, i.e., environmental pressure increases up to a certain level as income goes up; after that, it decreases. An EKC actually reveals how a technically specified measurement of environmental quality changes as the fortunes of a country change. A sizeable ...

Urban Transport Pollution: Revisiting the Environmental Kuznets Curve

An inverted-U relationship between GDP per capita and three urban transport-related emissions is tested (using data from 84 cities). Per capita urban transport-related emissions of CO, VHC, and NOx increase and then decline at observed income levels—a result driven by a similar inverted-U relationship between income and emissions technology (i.e., emissions per passengerkm). However, for urban ...

The Environmental Kuznets Curve:

1. Introduction The environmental Kuznets curve is a hypothesized relationship between various indicators of environmental degradation and income per capita. In the early stages of economic growth degradation and pollution increase, but beyond some level of income per capita (which will vary for different indicators) the trend reverses, so that at high-income levels economic growth leads to env...

Environmental Kuznets Curve

cointegration Classical regression analysis assumes that the error term in a regression is normally and independently distributed. An extreme violation of this condition is when the error term is a random walk. Such a regression is termed a spurious regression and the results are not reliable. It usually indicates that a required variable with random walk behavior has been omitted from the mode...

Confronting the Environmental Kuznets Curve

T he environmental Kuznets curve posits an inverted-U relationship between pollution and economic development. Kuznets’s name was apparently attached to the curve by Grossman and Krueger (1993), who noted its resemblance to Kuznets’s inverted-U relationship between income inequality and development. In the first stage of industrialization, pollution in the environmental Kuznets curve world grow...
